Spool Placecard Holders

“Sew in Love” 1 of 3

These little wooden spools are “Sew” cute and a great addition to your table setting!  We used them as both Place Card Holders and table accents. The place card holders are great because they not only instruct your guests where to sit, but they can also double as a favor!  You can stack them or leave them standing alone and feel free to combine difference sizes. If you have different heights and colors it adds dimension and makes it more visually appealing.

Materials:

1. Thread spools of various sizes & shapes

2. 20 gauge wire in the color of your choice

3. Crochet thread or thin yarn in your chosen colors

4. A marker or other cylindrical object, such as a wooden spoon handle, 1/2″ to 3/4″ in diameter.

5. Pliers

6. Wire Cutters

Step 1:

Re-wrap your spools (you can either take the existing thread off, or leave it on) with your crochet thread or thin gauge yarn. When spool is full, and existing thread is all covered up, tie the end of the crochet thread so it doesn’t unravel. (You can pass the end of the thread under one of the previous wrapped strands and tie a knot). Set your spools aside.

NOTE: We use a crochet thread or thin gauge yarn as opposed to regular thread to make a stronger visual statement. It’s easier to see the individual strands of the crochet thread from a distance, and it reads as “thread” to our eyes better than the thin thread does.

Step 2:

Using your wire cutters, cut off a piece of wire approximately 5 inches long to give you plenty to work with. Wrap the wire twice around your marker or cylindrical object, keeping the two wire circles close to each other.

Step 3:

After wrapping twice, twist the ends of the wire 4 to 5 times to secure the wire circles in place. Use your pliers to hold on to the wire to twist it.
TIP: While the wire is still on your marker, twist just one time, then slip it off the marker to finish twisting the wire. If you leave it on the marker to twist completely, it will get too tight and you won’t be able to get it off the marker.

Step 4:

Leaving the ends of the wire separated a bit to provide tension, squeeze them together just enough to fit them into the hole on the top of the spool.

Push the wire into the spool until the bottom of the circle sits right at the top of the spool hole.

To make sure the wire does not slip out, drop some white glue into the hole, making sure the glue touches both the wire and the spool.

After the glue dries, your spool place card holder is ready to use! Slip your place card in between the wire circles.

TIP: To vary the height of your placecards and add some visual interest, stack 2 spools (glue them together) and add the wire holder to the top, smaller spool. Make the spools each a different color to coordinate with your color scheme.
